“Libertarias” is a Spanish film directed by Vicente Aranda in 1996. The film is set during the Spanish Civil War and focuses on a group of women who join the anarchist and feminist struggle in Barcelona.

The story begins in 1936, at the outset of the Spanish Civil War. A young nun named María (played by Ariadna Gil) escapes from a convent that is being set on fire due to revolutionary violence. In her escape, she encounters a group of anarchist women led by Pilar (played by Ana Belén), who take her in and introduce her to their fight for gender equality and social justice.

The women fight alongside the anarchists against the Franco regime, engaging in armed confrontations and contributing to the revolutionary cause. As events unfold, María becomes one of the “libertarias” and embraces the anarchist and feminist cause.
