In 1907 an international anarchist congress was held in Amsterdam. Amongt the topics debated was the relationship between syndicalism and anarchism. Pierre Monatte (1881-1960) spoke in support of the French Confederation Generale du Travail, defending its apolitical stance and urging anarchists to join the syndicalist movement. Errico Malatesta criticised the syndicalists on a number of grounds.
